Client Success Story: Australian Wool Innovation

Australian Wool Innovation advances global operations by transforming their WAN with SD-WAN and Coevolve’s Co-Managed Service Offering.

Problem situation

Taking advantage of internet-based applications to streamline business operations and enable global connectivity and collaboration meant that Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) had to revisit its wide area network (WAN) strategy. With the existing network relying on legacy Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology and having a capacity ranging from one to four megabits per second (Mbps), meant the network could not support AWI’s changing business requirements and ambitions. AWI was also challenged by the increased use of multimedia, namely video production, that would congest the network.

“Facing an array of networking challenges, our MPLS network stumbled, evolving into a budgetary burden – one of the highest single line items. A reality we could no longer accept, especially given the network’s inadequate performance and scalability.”  – John Reed, General Manager of Digital and IT at AWI.

The solution

In pursuit of transforming their connectivity challenges, AWI turned to Coevolve, a global provider of telco-independent SD-WAN solutions. AWI’s decision to partner with Coevolve stemmed from Coevolve’s demonstrated experience in global deployments, co-managed capabilities, and deep understanding of next-generation networking and security technologies. Following a detailed assessment of the problem statement and future goals, Coevolve implemented a software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) based on VeloCloud technology.

The initial deployment of SD-WAN included an immediate evaluation across multiple international locations (Australia, UK, Japan, and Hong Kong) before being deployed across the whole AWI estate. This global deployment of SD-WAN has enabled AWI to retire their costly MPLS infrastructure resulting in significant cost savings (over 60% reduction).

The telco-independent SD-WAN solution, co-managed by Coevolve delivered additional benefits including:

  • Total network visibility
  • Increased network performance
  • Enhanced network security
  • Dramatic increase in capacity across all locations
  • A cloud-first architecture to continue the business drive toward SaaS and IaaS deployments

Increased network performance

The implementation of SD-WAN led to a dramatic increase in bandwidth where every site went from 2-4 Mbps to approximately 100 Mbps. Reed says, “With the introduction of SD-WAN and Coevolve’s co-managed capabilities, we’ve witnessed network performance soar, translating into seamless and efficient connectivity across our global environment.”

Enhanced network security

In response to the evolving demands of a distributed workforce, AWI took swift and decisive action to fortify its network security, recognizing the need for a more robust cyber security approach beyond its reliance on legacy VDI and appliance-based firewalls. Central to this transformation was Coevolve introducing Cato Networks’ Software Defined Perimeter (SDP) Client which enabled the deployment of a global secure web gateway solution for all user traffic. Additionally, the investment in a cloud firewall increased AWI’s network visibility and ability to inspect traffic in their digital environments. This approach has enabled AWI to adopt a Zero Trust approach to their user’s access to valuable corporate data.

As network security continues to be a focus area for AWI, they continue to expand security capabilities including next-generation antimalware, Intrusion Detection Systems, and Intrusion Prevention Systems that provide additional security intelligence on potential threats across their environments. This modern approach to security not only safeguards their network but also empowers AWI to adapt and thrive in an ever-evolving digital landscape.

Reed adds “Coevolve’s partnership is indispensable in our network evolution. Their unwavering commitment to our success has forged a bond that goes beyond mere collaboration; it’s a partnership built on trust, expertise, and shared aspirations. Through their guidance and innovative solutions, we’ve redefined what’s possible in network transformation. As we continue to navigate the complexities of the digital age, Coevolve remains our steadfast partner, ensuring that together, we rise to new heights of excellence and resilience.”

Looking ahead

Looking ahead, AWI’s commitment to elevating its cloud security strategy is clear and involves taking a more granular mindset to cloud access, security brokering, and data loss prevention measures. With Coevolve and Cato Networks’ capabilities, AWI is forging a future where security is not only robust but finely tuned to safeguard their digital environments with unparalleled precision and resilience.

“Our long-term partnership with AWI exemplifies our commitment to delivering adaptive, forward-thinking network solutions that not only meet the demands of today but also position our clients for future success. By implementing secure, scalable technologies like SD-WAN and a zero-trust approach, we empower our clients to achieve their digital ambitions with confidence. We always prioritize quality and trust in a long-term mindset to support the digital infrastructure that will amplify our clients’ success.” Tim Sullivan, Co-Founder and CEO at Coevolve.
